In our day to day life we all come across the word “emotions”. They are an important part of the human behavior and the interplay of emotions has a big impact on the organization behavior as well.
In general, the term "emotion" is used to designate "a state of consciousness having to do with the arousal of feelings (Webster‟s New World Dictionary)." It is "distinguished from other mental states, from cognition, volition, and awareness of physical sensation." Feeling refers to "any of the subjective reactions, pleasant or unpleasant" that one may experience in a situation.
An emotion is a mental and physiological state associated with a wide variety of feelings, thoughts, and behavior. Emotions are subjective experiences, often associated with mood, temperament, personality, and disposition. The English word 'emotion' is derived from the French word émouvoir. This is based on the Latin emovere, where e- (variant of ex-) means 'out'.
